Day 1: Departure to Lima

Today, fly from the UK to Lima, Peru

Arrive at Lima airport, complete immigration and customs, and then board the coach. Check into your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at your own leisure. Overnight stay in Lima.

Start the day exploring Lima, one of South America’s most historic cities, founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro in 1535. Begin your tour in the Historic Center, passing by the Huaca Pucllana on the way. Visit the Main Square, where you’ll see the Government Palace, the Archbishops Palace, the City Hall, and the Cathedral. Capture stunning photos of the colonial buildings. Continue to the San Francisco Monastery and its Catacombs, then head to the Banco Central de Reserva Museum, home to Peru’s treasures, including gold, ceramics, and textiles from various pre-Columbian cultures. (Please note: the BCRP Museum is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.)

Next, explore the residential areas of San Isidro and Miraflores, and enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean along the oceanfront. Enjoy a vegetarian lunch at a local restaurant in Miraflores. Afterward, the afternoon is free for you to relax and explore at your leisure. Finish the day with a delicious meal at an Indian restaurant. Overnight stay in Lima.

After an early breakfast, take a flight to Arequipa. Upon arrival, begin with an orientation tour of the city. Start at the Plaza de Armas, the main square, and see the Cathedral from the outside. Then take a walk through the cloisters of La Compañía Church and the San Francisco Square.

Next, visit the Santuarios Andinos Museum at Santa María Catholic University, where you’ll see the famous mummy Juanita, also known as the “Lady of Ampato.” She was an Inca adolescent sacrificed to the mountain gods, found frozen on Mount Ampato after being buried in ice for around 500 years.

Afterward, explore the Santa Catalina Convent, founded in 1580, with its beautiful cloisters, charming streets, and plazas that have been preserved for centuries. Learn about the lives of the nuns who once lived here.

Overnight stay in Arequipa

Today, visit the historic San Lazaro district and Carmen Alto, and enjoy the breathtaking view of Arequipa and the three nearby volcanoes: Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu, from the Yanahuara Belvedere.

Next, embark on your journey to the Colca Valley, passing the thermal baths of Yura and heading towards the “National Reserve of Pampa de Cañahuas” at 3,800 meters above sea level. Keep an eye out for Alpacas, Vicuñas, and occasionally, guanacos. Continue to Vizcachani and the Toccra Pampas, where you’ll skirt the crater of the Chucura Volcano before reaching the Los Andes Scenic Viewpoint in Patapampa (4,910 meters). Here, you can see several volcanoes surrounding Arequipa.

After several more hours of scenic driving, begin your descent into the Colca Valley, passing through several small villages until you reach Chivay, the valley’s largest town. Enjoy a delicious lunch, followed by some free time to relax in the hot springs.

Today, travel to the Cross of the Condor, one of the best spots to take in the stunning views of Colca Canyon. If the weather permits, you may be lucky enough to witness the majestic flight of the condors.

On your way back, stop at the vibrant towns of Pinchollo and Maca, then return to Chivay for a lunch break. Afterward, depart for Arequipa in the early afternoon. The journey will take around six hours, passing through Patapampa and the scenic viewpoint of the volcanoes along the way.

Overnight in Arequipa

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your early morning flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, continue your journey to the Sacred Valley.

Your first stop is the Pisac Inca Citadel, perched high on a mountain range with panoramic views of the Sacred Valley. Explore this ancient site, which includes temples, living areas, agricultural terraces, and astronomical observatories built by the Incas centuries ago.

Next, visit the village of Pisac, known for its vibrant handicraft market, where you can shop for local goods. Enjoy a buffet-style lunch before heading to Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town that is still inhabited today. Explore the impressive ruins that rise above the town.

Overnight stay in the Sacred Valley.

Today, transfer from your hotel to the train station for a scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes, located at the base of the Machu Picchu ruins. From there, take a bus to the entrance of Machu Picchu for a guided tour. Explore this ancient city, built entirely from stone blocks, perfectly fitted together. Marvel at its houses, temples, warehouses, and central square, all connected by narrow roads and steps, with agricultural terraces carved into the mountainside.

After the tour, return to Ollantaytambo by train and then drive back to Cusco. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in Cusco.

Today, enjoy a guided city tour of Cusco, starting with a visit to the Main Square, the Cathedral, and the Santo Domingo Church (Koricancha), once the most important Inca temple.

Next, explore four fascinating Inca ruins on the outskirts of Cusco:

  1. Sacsayhuaman Fortress: A pre-Inca masterpiece offering stunning views of the city.
  2. Kenko: A rock sanctuary featuring a monolithic altar shaped like a puma.
  3. Puca Pucara: Known as the “Red Fortress,” this site served as a military checkpoint.
  4. Tambomachay: Known for its Inca baths, this site is associated with water rituals.

Overnight stay in Cusco

After breakfast, drive to Puno, enjoying the stunning views of the valley south of Cusco along the way. Your first stop is Andahuaylillas, home to a beautiful 17th-century church featuring an impressive organ decorated with angels and cherubs.

Next, visit Racchi, also known as the “Temple of Wiracocha.” Explore the different sections of the site, each used for various purposes.

Continue to the Puca Pucara archaeological site, once a military camp and administrative center.

Overnight stay in Puno

After breakfast, drive from Puno to Copacabana, a picturesque town located between two hills on the shores of Lake Titicaca, home to the famous dark virgin statue.

Take a hydrofoil cruise to Sun Island, where you’ll visit the Inca “Grand Stairs” and the Sacred Fountain, known for its waters believed to bring eternal youth and happiness. Enjoy lunch at the Uma Kollu Archaeological Restaurant and explore the small handicraft market.

Next, continue your cruise to Moon Island and visit the Sun Virgins Temple (“Iñak Uyu”). Afterward, board a hydrofoil cruise to Cocotani, followed by a bus transfer to Huatajata.

Upon arrival, experience the mystical world of the Kallawayas, Bolivia’s natural healers, through an audiovisual presentation. Tata Benjo, a Kallawaya healer, will bless visitors and answer questions by casting his sacred coca leaves.

This morning, take a Hydrofoil cruise to Kalauta Island. Visit the ancient stone village ruins and one of the largest necropolises in the area, featuring mysterious Chullpas mortuary towers, some with two or three floors.

Next, enjoy a scenic navigation on Lake Titicaca, drifting through totora-reed canals to reach the Urus Iruitos Floating Islands and the Quewaya Sustainable Project. This project helps preserve a 5,000-year-old culture and supports the community’s survival. Take in the breathtaking view of the Royal Range of the Andes.

Return to Huatajata, where you’ll visit the Andean Roots Eco Village, including the Altiplano Museum, the Handicrafts Village, the Mud Igloos, and the mortuary towers of the Urus Chipayas.

Meet the Limachi family, famed for building the RA II and Tigris boats used in epic expeditions across the Atlantic Ocean. See the vicuñas, llamas, alpacas, and the mythical Suri.

In the evening, visit the Native Observatory Alajpacha, where you can learn about the Aymara cosmovision and observe the southern constellations.

Overnight in Huatajata.

Embark on an overland journey, traveling alongside the snow-capped peaks of the Andes towards Tiwanaku. Explore this ancient archaeological site, which dates back to 1,580 BC-1,000 AD. Tiwanaku was home to one of the oldest civilizations in the Americas. Key highlights include the Sun Gate, the Temple of Kalasasaya, and the Pyramid of Akapana, remnants of a once-glorious past. The Tiwanaku culture was agrarian-based, with an estimated population of 115,000.

Afterward, continue your drive to La Paz. Upon arrival, enjoy a scenic cable car ride across the city, offering spectacular views of this high-altitude metropolis.

This morning, transfer to La Paz Airport for a flight to Uyuni. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel to drop off your luggage before embarking on an excursion to the Uyuni Salt Flats and Isla Pescado.

Uyuni is the largest salt flat on Earth, covering 12,000 square kilometers on the Bolivian Andean Altiplano. The surreal landscapes here are unlike anywhere else, with crystalline salt pentagons, vivid lagoons, towering cacti, and flocks of flamingos. The vast, silent expanse and the stunning surroundings make this place feel otherworldly.

Enjoy lunch at Isla Pescado (also known as Incawasi), an oasis filled with ancient algae formations and fossils, and covered by giant columnar cacti, some over 100 years old, growing up to 12 meters tall. The dramatic scenery, with the salt pans stretching to the horizon, makes it a perfect spot for photography.

Dinner and overnight stay in Uyuni

This morning, transfer to the airport for your return flight to La Paz. Upon arrival, embark on a half-day city tour of La Paz and the Moon Valley.

La Paz, with its rich history and vibrant culture, takes you on a journey through time. From the indigenous, colonial, and modern areas, to the Indian Market and the Witch Doctor’s Market, every corner of the city tells a story. The majestic Illimani Mountain provides a stunning backdrop to this living history, filled with traditions and magical rites.

Next, visit the Moon Valley, where unique clay formations resemble the face of the moon. Enjoy a cable car ride for panoramic views of the city, offering breathtaking vistas of La Paz and its surroundings.

This morning, transfer to La Paz Airport for your flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Today, embark on a comprehensive city tour of Buenos Aires, starting with a visit to Plaza de Mayo Square, followed by the Government House, Metropolitan Cathedral, Mayo Avenue, the Congress Palace, and the Colón Theatre (viewed from outside). Explore the historic Cabildo and the vibrant La Boca neighborhood, as well as the beautiful Palermo area.

After lunch, head to Tigre, located at the mouth of the Parana River Delta. Enjoy a boat ride through the delta, where you’ll see a blend of old mansions and newer wooden houses built on pilings to withstand the rising river. The delta’s islets, lush with subtropical vegetation, are interconnected by canals and rivulets, providing a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

In the evening, return to the hotel and later transfer to a spectacular Tango Show, experiencing the passion and energy of Argentina’s iconic dance.

Transfer to Buenos Aires Airport for your flight to Iguazu Falls. Upon arrival, you’ll be met and taken to your hotel near the falls. Please note that due to limited accommodation options near the falls, the hotel may be a bit farther away, depending on early booking availability.

In the afternoon, enjoy a short walk to the viewing platforms, where you can experience the lush jungle, observe local wildlife, and get up close to the magnificent Iguazu Falls. After breakfast, head to the Argentinean side of Iguazu Falls. Board a small train in the heart of the National Park, which will take you to the walkways leading to the iconic Devil’s Throat area. Enjoy breathtaking views of the falls and the surrounding jungle.

After some free time to explore and take in the stunning scenery, return to your hotel for the evening.

This morning, visit the Iguazu Bird Park, where you can explore a variety of tropical bird species in their natural habitat. Afterward, transfer to the airport for your flight to Rio de Janeiro.

Upon arrival in Rio, you will be met and transferred to Sugar Loaf Mountain, one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Enjoy a scenic cable car ride to the summit, offering stunning panoramic views of the city and its beaches.

Start your day with a half-day city tour of Rio de Janeiro, including visits to the city’s iconic beaches.
