Journey through the “Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains,” exploring the ancient monasteries of Tawang, traversing the snow-capped Sela Pass, and seeking thrills in the dense forests of Nameri National Park. Designed for nature enthusiasts and peace-seekers, this diverse itinerary blends thrilling wildlife encounters, sacred temple visits, and sweeping Himalayan vistas for an unforgettable Northeast Indian holiday.

Day 1: Arrival in Guwahati & Transfer to Bhalukpong

Welcome to Guwahati! Upon arrival at the airport or railway station, our representative will greet you for a scenic drive to Bhalukpong, a serene town nestled in the Himalayan foothills. Check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. You can opt to visit the nearby Pakke (Pakhui) Wildlife Sanctuary for birdwatching or head to the Kameng River to experience the thrill of river rafting and canoeing. Overnight stay in Bhalukpong.

After breakfast, embark on a beautiful drive to Dirang. Along the way, stop at the Tipi Orchid Research Centre, which showcases over 500 vibrant species of orchids, and seek blessings at the sacred Nag Temple. Upon reaching Dirang, check into your hotel. In the afternoon, explore the town’s spiritual side with visits to the beautifully crafted Dirang Monastery and the Kalachakra Gompa, a hub of Tibetan Buddhist teachings. Overnight stay in Dirang.

Start your morning early as you embark on an awe-inspiring drive to Tawang. Today’s journey takes you across the magnificent Sela Pass at 13,700 feet. Pause to soak in the beauty of the frozen, pristine Sela Lake. Continue onwards to the Jaswant Garh War Memorial to pay tribute to the Indian Army’s bravery. Before reaching Tawang, marvel at the roaring Jung Falls (Nuranang Falls). Arrive in Tawang, check into your hotel, and rest for the night.

Dedicate today to discovering the gems of Tawang. Your tour begins with a visit to the mesmerizing Shonga-tser Lake, famously known as Madhuri Lake. If you have arranged permits, you may take an optional excursion to the historic Bumla Pass at the Indo-China border. Later, experience the tranquil atmosphere of Taktsang Gompa and explore the magnificent Tawang Monastery—the largest in India, boasting a massive gilded Buddha statue and rich archives. Return to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Bid farewell to the high altitudes of Tawang as you wind your way down to the picturesque town of Bomdila. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and freshen up. Later, head out for a half-day exploration of Bomdila’s spiritual landmarks. Visit the Gontse Rabgyaling Monastery for sweeping mountain views and the Thubchog Gatsel Ling Monastery, where you can experience a profound sense of peace amid chanting monks. Overnight stay in Bomdila.

Check out from Bomdila and drive back into Assam, heading toward the lush landscapes of Nameri National Park. Check into your eco-camp or hotel upon arrival. The rest of the day is yours to embrace the wild. Take a guided nature walk through the dense forests, keeping an eye out for exotic birds like the Great Hornbill, or enjoy a thrilling session of river rafting on the sparkling waters of the Jia Bhoroli River. Overnight stay in Nameri.

After a refreshing morning in the wild, check out and drive back to the bustling city of Guwahati. After checking into your hotel and relaxing, spend your evening exploring the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra. This sprawling cultural institution beautifully displays the art, history, and vibrant heritage of Assam, often culminating in an engaging light and sound show. Overnight stay in Guwahati.

On your final day, check out early and drive to the revered Kamakhya Devi Temple, perched on the Nilachal Hill. Experience the mystical aura and ancient tantric history of one of India’s most important Shakti Peethas. Afterward, you will be comfortably transferred to the Guwahati Airport or Railway Station, bringing your incredible 8-day Arunachal and Assam journey to a memorable end.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the wildlife experience at Nameri National Park different from typical jeep safaris?

Unlike many other national parks in India, Nameri does not offer jeep safaris. Instead, it is famous for thrilling guided nature walks deep into the forest and tranquil river rafting on the Jia Bhoroli River. It is a fantastic, highly immersive way to spot exotic birds, elephants, and unique flora on foot.

Sela Pass sits at an altitude of 13,700 ft and Tawang is around 10,000 ft. While most travelers acclimate well by driving up gradually, some may experience mild symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Staying hydrated, eating light meals, and avoiding sudden physical exertion on Day 3 and Day 4 will help you acclimate comfortably.

No, standard commercial vehicles from outside Tawang are not permitted to travel to Bumla Pass due to rugged terrain and local union regulations. You must hire a local, specialized 4×4 vehicle (like a Tata Sumo or Mahindra Bolero) from the Tawang taxi stand, and acquire an additional military permit a day prior.

Yes, vegetarian food is widely available. While local diets lean heavily toward meat, all standard hotels, homestays, and roadside dhabas happily serve Indian vegetarian staples like dal, rice, mixed vegetables, and vegetarian momos/thukpas.
