Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the experience of visiting Tsomgo Lake in different seasons?
The lake offers two distinct personalities: in winter (Jan–Mar), it is a solid, frozen white sheet of ice where you can enjoy yak rides on the snow; in spring (Apr–June), it transforms into a brilliant turquoise blue surrounded by blooming rhododendrons.
2. Can I see Mt. Kanchenjunga from my hotel in Gangtok?
While many hotels offer ridge views, the most iconic, unobstructed views are experienced at sunrise from Tashi View Point or Hanuman Tok. Choosing a hotel in the “Upper Sichey” or “Enchey” areas increases your chances of a room with a view.
3. Is the food in Gangtok only about Momos and Thukpa?
While those are staples, the local food scene is rich. Don’t miss Phagshapa (pork with radish), Gundruk (fermented leafy greens), and the traditional Sikkimese Set Meal. For the brave, try the local fermented millet drink called Chaang, served in traditional bamboo mugs.
4. What should I pack for a trip to Gangtok?
The weather is unpredictable. Even in summer, evenings can be chilly. We recommend “onion layering”—light cottons for the day, a fleece jacket for the evening, and a heavy down jacket specifically for the high-altitude trip to Tsomgo Lake.
